The hormones that are produced by someone’s thyroid will affect the shape of their body. The hormones that are produced by the thyroid will impact the way that a person is able to use energy. The hormones that are produced there regulate the metabolism in both animals and humans. Measurement of the basic metabolic rate was one of the earliest tests used to assess a patient’s thyroid status. For people who had a slower metabolism the reason was a thyroid that did not produce enough hormones. Thyroid glands that produced too many hormones were indicated by a higher basic metabolic rate.
Differences in BMRs are associated with changes in energy balance. A high BMR can lead to weight loss and a low BMR can lead to weight gain and since changes in thyroid can lead to changes in BMR although the thyroid hormones do not control the BMR by themselves as there are other factors in a person’s body that also have an effect, but it could help to explain why weight gain is one of the underactive thyroid symptoms in women that a doctor considers when evaluating the possibility of a thyroid condition, especially if the weight gain is in a woman.
When hyperthyroidism is diagnosed many patients do experience some weight loss. It is possible to link the severity of the problem to how many pounds are lost. When dealing with this condition a person will find that their metabolism is working faster. People need to eat more to supply their body with the energy it is demanding. If the person does not increase the calories consumed to match the excess calories burned, then weight loss will ensue.
If a person finds that they have a lower basic metabolic rate they are possible not producing enough hormones. The symptoms of low thyroid condition can cause some weight gain and like with hyperthyroidism the weight gain is often greater in those individuals with more severe hypothyroidism, but the decrease in BMR due to hypothyroidism is usually much less dramatic than the marked increase seen in hyperthyroidism, leading to more modest alterations in weight due to the under active thyroid. Increased salt and water retention is one of the main things that someone picks up a few pounds if they have an under active thyroid. Someone may not see a larger increase but will usually see smaller increases on the scale because of the lack of hormones. A person who has put on weight should check to see if they have any other thyroid symptoms as there could be other causes for their weight gain.
Much of the weight gain in hypothyroidism is accumulation in salt and water. When the hormones are balanced the extra pounds can come off quickly. Once a person is able to get their hormones in balance they should find that they can return to a normal body weight. It is likely that someone who has had trouble with their body shape might have other problems especially if through treatment they are able to get their hormone levels that are produced by the thyroid into a proper balance. People can stay fit and trim by watching what they eat and exercising once they have their over active or under active thyroid issues controlled through medication.
Thyroid hormones have been used as a weight loss tool in the past. It is not always safe for a person to try to use this type of treatment. For that reason if a person needs to lose weight they should do it through diet and exercise.
