Big Goals Are Great, But Don’t Forget The Small Ones

One reason so many people fail when they set a big goal is because they didn’t set up mini goals to move them closer to their ultimate target.

For example, let’s say you want to lose 50 pounds so you set that as your goal. Well, that’s great if you indeed need to lose 50 pounds. However, if you stop there, it’s unlikely you’ll lose even 5 pounds let alone 50. The second piece of this puzzle is to set mini progress or performance goals that will enable you to eventually achieve your final goal.

One goal you might set is to go for a 30 minute walk around your neighboorhood each day. And then whatever you do, make sure you complete your walk every day. You’ll know right away whether you’re on or off track. All you have to do is ask yourself if you completed your walk. If so, congratulations. If not, how do you plan to ever lose those 50 pounds if you can’t even take a simple walk?

The reason this works is because you can measure your progress immediately. And, since there is a high level of accountablilty - at least to yourself - you’re less likely to slack off. So, don’t be afraid to aim high, but be sure to set small, measurable goals you can complete each day on your way.
