Time Management - Taking The First Step

What does time management mean to you? Most of us claim we need to become better at it while a select few seem to manage their own time quite well.

For those of us who know we need to improve, learning how to manage time can seem like an impossible task. If time seems to manage you rather than the other way around, you need to take action now to get the most out of your life - starting today.

A good place to start is to realize the negative impact your lack of time management skills has on your life. Maybe you’re so disorganized you can never find important documents when you need them. This can result in you losing money or missing an opportunity. Or perhaps you’re not productive at work. If this lack of productivity gets out of control, you could lose your job. By recognizing the importance of gaining control, you’ll be more likely to take your time planning seriously.

OK, so you’re convinced you need to manage your time better. Where do you start? There are so many strategies you could use - some of them will work well for you and others simply won’t. Unless you’re lucky and pick the perfect strategy the first time around, it may take some trial and error before you get the hang of time management and what works best for you.

However, the single most important thing you can do is to determine what you need to accomplish. In other words, start with the end in mind. Then, with a clear goal of where you need to be, work backward to determine exactly what steps you need to perform in order to get there. Then, assign blocks of time for each item you need to do. This can serve as a working schedule and because you know what you must do, you are more likely to stick to the time schedule assigned.

Although time management techniques can be much more complicated than this, they don’t have to be. Give this one strategy a try and see how you do. It will give you a good idea of where your skills are and how much you need to build upon them in the future.
